Utilita launches dashboard to enhance transparency in energy sourcing

Utilita Energy has launched the UK’s first Live Carbon Dashboard, providing real-time transparency regarding the fuel mix and carbon emissions associated with energy supplied to households. This initiative aims to challenge misleading claims surrounding ‘100% renewable energy tariffs’ made by various energy suppliers.

The dashboard allows Utilita customers to view the actual energy mix in their region, utilising half-hourly data to present an accurate picture of the energy being consumed. This move is intended to close existing loopholes that enable companies to misrepresent their renewable energy offerings.

Archie Lasseter, Utilita’s head of sustainability, launched the project, saying:

“The dashboard is more than a tool for measurement – it’s a platform for change. It demonstrates the urgency for vital market reform through government action to decarbonise the National Grid. The current UK energy market mechanism is undermining the country’s efforts to meet its net zero obligation, making it harder for businesses, policymakers, and consumers to align with climate goals.

“By launching the Live Carbon Dashboard, Utilita aims to showcase the realities of its own operations while sparking dialogue around the systemic changes required to accelerate the UK’s journey to net zero by saying what is in the tin.

Lasseter adds that the last 12 months has seen other suppliers take more transparent approaches to telling customers where their energy is coming from, but Utilita has gone further. It isn’t just time-matching supply to demand – it is using location as well, adding a new level of transparency.

The dashboard features real-time monitoring of Utilita’s carbon emissions, covering operational sources such as transport and office energy use. It also includes plans to expand its scope to encompass the entire supply chain, promoting responsible sourcing practices. By providing actionable insights, the tool aims to identify areas for emission reduction and improve operational transparency.

In addition to fostering accountability, the dashboard is integrated into Utilita’s app, My Utilita, allowing customers to make informed decisions about their energy consumption based on the actual fuel mix.

The launch of the Live Carbon Dashboard comes at a time when pressure is mounting on energy companies to enhance transparency in their environmental impact disclosures. Utilita hopes that this initiative will encourage other suppliers to adopt similar measures, thereby promoting greater accountability across the industry.
