New programme to benefit home battery owners in Great Britain
SolarEdge Technologies has announced a new partnership with Axle Energy to launch the SolarEdge Flexible Grid Services programme, allowing owners of SolarEdge Home Batteries in Great Britain to earn up to £250 this winter. This initiative enables homeowners to contribute stored energy to the national grid during periods of high demand, congestion, or imbalance.
The Flexible Grid Services programme aims to maximise financial rewards for participants by facilitating their involvement in multiple grid services simultaneously. Utilising SolarEdge’s Virtual Power Plant (VPP) capabilities, the programme allows batteries to respond quickly to various grid service requirements without requiring manual input from homeowners.
The programme’s initial phase, which began in November 2024, features two main services. The Demand Flexibility Service allows stored energy to supplement grid electricity during peak demand periods across the nation. The Network Flexibility Service enables Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) to manage local grid congestion by shifting loads in specific regions.
Future phases of the programme are expected to introduce additional services, including Frequency Response, which would help stabilise grid frequency using stored energy, and participation in the Wholesale Energy Market as part of recent electricity market reforms.
Plans for phase two of the programme aim to include additional services such as Frequency Response, which could leverage participating customers’ stored energy to help stabilise grid frequency, as well as Wholesale Energy Market participation, in alignment with the latest electricity market reforms (P415).
Christelle Barnes, UK country manager at SolarEdge Technologies:
“We are delighted to partner with Axle Energy to help SolarEdge customers to unlock even more value from their home solar and storage systems. By participating in the Flexible Grid Services program, SolarEdge Home Battery owners can earn meaningful financial rewards for doing their bit to support the grid, making the return on investment period for their solar and storage system even more attractive. Importantly, the process is fully automated – meaning that once customers have signed up, they don’t need to do anything else.”
Karl Bach, co-founder of Axle Energy:
“Households with solar and storage systems have a crucial role to play in helping to decarbonise and support the grid. By participating in VPP programs such as SolarEdge Flexible Grid Services, they are helping to ensure a more sustainable and reliable electricity supply for everyone.”
“The VPP proposition is particularly compelling for SolarEdge Home battery customers,” Bach continues. “SolarEdge’s technology is designed to provide an extremely rapid response in grid services scenarios, increasing the number of services customers can be enrolled into. The more services they are able to participate in, the more money they can earn.”
