Lighting in clear focus
Taking place at Earls Court on 20-21 November, LuxLive is an entirely free-to-attend event with a clear focus on low-energy lighting and retro-fitting. The event has been created to help you to cut your carbon dioxide emissions while improving your lit environment. As lighting equates to some 20 per cent of total energy use, it’s a priority area that’s being tackled with new technology and sophisticated controls, many of which will be showcased at LuxLive.
Major users of lighting such as retailers, commercial offices, healthcare and hospitals, universities and schools, manufacturing, transport and public sector street and outdoor lighting will all benefit from being able to see the major players and to hear from expert speakers discussing exemplar projects.
For energy managers, lighting specifiers such as designers, consulting engineers, facilities managers, architects, contractors and distributors LuxLive is an absolute ‘must do’. As Waitrose energy manager, Toby Marlow, said about LuxLive: “I’m able to really question the experts in the market, see who’s coming through, really understand the technology, then compare it with the previous year.” It’s the most comprehensive and exciting lighting exhibition in the UK: a ground-breaking mix of new technologies and innovations, masterclasses, seminars, demos and features.
LuxLive features more than 50 hours of free-to-attend talks, debates, product demos and panel discussions. At the heart of its programme is the EcoLight conference – a special event on low-carbon lighting aimed at helping those with large lighting estates to transform their interiors – and slash their energy bills.
The EcoLight conference will lift the lid on some of the UK’s most challenging lighting projects, taking a look how they have successfully transformed their environment whilst dramatically reducing energy consumption. Hear how the all-LED combined Waitrose and John Lewis outlet has an installed load of under the magic 10W/m2. In a special video report and panel discussion, you’ll learn how it was achieved and the implications for retail.
There will be more than 20 sessions from you to choose from. For example, you will be able to hear how the lighting of Musselburgh Primary Care Centre, East Lothian – a £20m, 6,300m2 centre which incorporates three GPs’ surgeries and 15 primary care departments – helped the project achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating. Meanwhile, Richard Felgate, energy manager at Mitchells & Butlers, whose estate includes the All Bar One, O’Neill’s and Harvester chains will explain the company’s massive low-energy lighting roll-out. There will also be a chance to hear from Arla Foods how their lighting installation contributed significantly to their ‘mega dairy’ in Aylesbury being the world’s first zero-carbon milk processing plant.
There’ll be debates about LEDs, retail lighting and controls in the new LuxArena and a comprehensive financing briefing by big providers such as the Carbon Trust, Siemens and others, giving you an invaluable overview of the various ways to fund a lighting retrofit. In this special session, they will outline the various options that are available to fund a low-energy retrofit lighting installation.
| Leading the technological shift in lighting, LuxLive exhibitors will be presenting ground-breaking developments designed to allow you to create stunning spaces, while dramatically reducing your carbon footprint and slashing energy bills. All the big names will be showing their latest kit including Philips, GE, Thorn and Toshiba. In total there will be more than 160 exhibitors including up-and-coming players with hot kit such as Ricoh, Soarer and Rako. Also, established names such as Dextra will be showing their developments for the first time in a generation. | |

Lighting Talk Live Panel Discussions
LEDs in retail – hit or miss? Can LEDs stop the big streetlighting switch off? How can we tackle the NHS’s legacy lighting? If LEDs are so great, why won’t manufacturers give decent warranties? Just some of the questions our panel of grumpy, opinionated experts will tackle.

What’s seriously cool and what’s totally uncool? Leading product and lighting designers and manufacturers pass judgment on the stand-out luminaires made possible by LED and OLED designs, and discuss how to maximise the design possibilities of solid state technology to give specifiers new solutions to old problems.
Lighting Spy
We expose the worst excesses of lighting energy waste in the UK – by visiting new and existing projects and checking. But we don’t just criticise – our Lighting Spy team will propose alternatives that will save energy and improve the quality of the lighting.
Named and Shamed
Complementing the popular monthly feature in Lux magazine, our team looks at some of the worst lighting installations that we’ve featured over the past year and asks: What on earth were they thinking?
Heroes and Villains
Team Lux and friends name those who are pushing lighting forward (and those who should be on lighting’s naughty step). Culminates in a vote for the greatest hero – and the worst villain.
Keynote: LEDs – The Roadmap
The inventor of the blue LED and the man who single-handedly created the LED revolution, Shuji Nakamura of Soraa, gives his view of the future roadmap of the transition to LEDs, including the possibilities created by gallium-on-gallium technology. Followed by a one-on-one interview by Ray Molony, editor of Lux Review, and market overview by Nick Farraway of Soraa.
Product Demos
You don’t learn that much about a product from the advertisements. Which is why we’ve compiled a list of the most interesting kit – and asked the manufacturers to come and explain it in person.
Dragons’ Den
In this ever-popular format based on the massively successful BBC television programme, entrepreneurs pitch their innovative lighting ideas to our panel of seasoned industry professionals. Who’ll get the thumbs up, and who’ll be told to think again?
