'Invisible' solar panels installed at Stormont
Over 400 thin-film solar and standard PV panels are now in operation at Northern Ireland’s iconic government headquarters, generating 40,000kWh of energy each year and saving the building £9,000 a year in costs.
The panels, selected due to their discreet appearance and efficiency in low light and cloud, were installed by solar energy specialists Beacon Renewable Energy between April and July this year.
Peter McFetridge, manager of Beacon Renewable Energy which installed the panels, explained how the panels will be invisible to most visitors to the building.
"These are one of the thinnest solar panels on the market and remain completely unseen at Parliament Buildings unless someone is on the roof or above the building," he said.
Stormont’s green energy addition is the latest in a number of historic buildings to have a renewable power source installed, including a new solar system at iconic art gallery Tate Modern unveiled last week.
