Demand reduction policies key part of new body
The commission, which will be led by former Labour transport secretary Lord Adonis (right), will produce a list of priority infrastructure projects at the start of each five-year parliament.
According to Mr. Osborne, he wants the commission “to shake Britain out of its inertia on infrastructure”.
One of the NIC's immediate tasks is 'Delivering future proof energy infrastructure'. Critically its brief is quite specific, in not automatically assuming that this can only be achieved by investment in new energy generation. Instead the Treasury brief states:
“The UK's power sector has a growing problem in matching demand and supply, meaning that keeping the lights on requires a level of redundancy in the system – generation which is not always used.
