Completion of world-first green gas network in Fife

SGN has successfully completed construction of the H100 Fife project, establishing the world’s first domestic hydrogen gas network in Levenmouth, Fife. The new 8.4-kilometer network will use green hydrogen from a local 7MW offshore wind turbine.

Set to go live next year, the H100 Fife network will allow residents to participate in Scotland’s first green hydrogen community by enrolling in a trial program. This initiative offers a carbon-free solution for heating and cooking, allowing participants to use their existing boilers and radiators, with the key difference that hydrogen combustion produces no carbon emissions.

H100 Fife distribution manager Max Biret comments:

We’re grateful to the Levenmouth community for your trust, patience, and cooperation. Your support has been invaluable in helping us deliver a high-quality project on schedule.

“Having this new network in place means we can start converting customers to green hydrogen once our production and storage site is ready next year. We’re still welcoming more customers to join if you live in the network area. We’ll support you every step of the way through your energy transition.”

To support this transition, SGN is training gas engineers to connect homes to the new hydrogen mains and is collaborating with Fife College to establish the UK’s first hydrogen training facility. This facility will provide training for existing Gas Safe engineers on installing hydrogen appliances.

The H100 Fife project is expected to provide vital data to inform future low-carbon energy policies for Scotland and the UK, with further developments anticipated in 2026.
