Amazon boosts renewable energy portfolio in Europe, aiming for 100% renewable energy by 2025

Amazon has announced the addition of 39 new renewable energy projects in Europe this year, increasing its total to over 160 wind and solar projects across 13 European countries. These projects, once operational, are expected to provide 5.8 gigawatts of clean energy capacity, sufficient to power more than 4.7 million European households annually.

The new projects include 15 rooftop solar installations on Amazon facilities and 24 utility-scale wind and solar projects, including Amazon’s first solar farm in Greece. The project in Greece follows Amazon’s first utility-scale solar farm in Poland last year.

Lindsay McQuade, director of energy, EMEA at Amazon, stated that Amazon’s goal is to power its operations with 100 per cent renewable energy by 2025.

Amazon says it has developed a new economic model, validated by Oxford Economics, to measure the impact of its renewable energy investments. The company is now Europe’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, a position it has held since 2021. In 2022, 90% of electricity consumed by Amazon globally was powered by renewable energy sources.
