Imaging technology improves leak detection efficiency
A new industrial acoustic imaging camera has been developed by FLIR to improve the detection and measurement of compressed air and vacuum leaks. The device uses an array of 96 microphones to pinpoint leaks at distances of up to 130m, operating within a frequency range of 2-100 kHz. A 12-megapixel colour camera with digital zoom and an LED lamp provides additional visual details to support inspections.
Compressed air systems commonly lose 25–30% of their air to leaks, leading to higher energy costs, unplanned downtime and increased maintenance. The camera’s bandpass filtering helps users focus on relevant ultrasound signals, reducing interference from background noise. It features a touch-screen interface that displays real-time images and quantifies leaks by volume flow rate and estimated cost per year, allowing businesses to prioritise repairs. Data can be wirelessly transferred to reporting and analysis software, and a wired option is available for facilities with restricted network access.
Designed for ease of use, the camera is lightweight and suitable for one-handed operation. It requires minimal training, suiting it for large-scale inspections. It is available in two versions, with or without Wi-Fi, while all other features remain the same. ■
