Efficiency the decisive factor in electric motor choice

ABB has released new research providing insights into how global businesses are prioritising energy efficiency and sustainability when it comes to choosing electric motors.

The independent survey conducted by Sapio Research involved interviews with nearly 2,400 decision-makers in over a dozen countries. Respondents represented industries such as manufacturers of OEM machinery, energy and power, food and beverage, metals, and chemicals.

A key finding is that 91% of respondents said energy efficiency now has a critical influence on their electric motor choice. Furthermore, 94% of businesses are either currently investing or planning to invest in sustainability initiatives.

Total cost of ownership over the lifetime of the motor is also a major consideration, with 97% of total costs coming from electricity, compared to just 2% for the initial upfront cost.

While upfront expenditure remains a barrier for some, businesses recognise the long-term savings to be made. 99% now track return on investment from efficiency projects, with payback periods often just months.

Digitalisation is another trend uncovered in the research. 99% see value in condition monitoring capabilities of connected motors, and nearly all see benefits to electric motor e-commerce for product comparisons and ordering.
