CPD: Energy efficient data centres
As of April 2023, there were 5.18bn internet users, which amounted to 64.6% of the global population. Of this total, 4.8bn were social media users. Every minute 2.4m searches are conducted on Google, 231m emails are sent, and 167m TikTok videos are watched globally. Our internet activity is made possible by servers worldwide, many housed in data centres, best described as a warehouse of racks containing servers and computer systems through which our online activity flows.
