Smart meter
Smart metering, though first proposed in the 1970s, has only come to prominence during the past decade. A reduction in the cost of the technology and the need to reduce carbon emissions have converged to make a viable business case. Commercial interest has now reached the point at which present and future investment in smart metering in the European Union has been estimated at €51bn, with potential financial benefits ranging from €14bn to €67bn.
