Land Securities embraces renewable electricity

Land Securities aim to provide all of its buildings with the green electricity, which will be backed by the Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin certification, set up to ensure electricity has been produced from renewable sources, from April next year.

The commercial landlord, who recorded an eight per cent reduction in energy consumption last year, was dictated by the need to move to cleaner energy and not just securing cheaper energy to their customers.

A spokesperson for the company said: “Whilst moving to a green electricity contract is clearly a crucial step in our transition away from carbon, we have also for many years given great priority to reducing our energy requirements through active management in all our sites.

“We are not staying still, for example we are currently conducting feasibility studies across several of our retail sites to assess whether there is opportunity to retrofit photovoltaics and reduce our grid dependency.

“All of these changes are part of our ambition to be a sustainability leader and recognition of the role we can play in supporting the UK’s transition to being a low carbon economy.”

Land Securities is the UK's largest Real Estate Investment Trust. They own and manage more than 26 million sq ft of commercial property.
