Condenser package to strengthen grid stability for data centres

A pre-engineered modular synchronous condenser package has been launched by ABB, designed to support grid stability for large-scale data centres.

The system is intended for use where rapid changes in electrical demand, associated with AI workloads, can place strain on voltage and frequency stability in power networks.

The package is installed at the grid connection point and is designed to provide inertia and reactive power to help stabilise voltage and frequency during sudden load fluctuations. According to ABB, this is designed to reduce disturbances across the network and support more stable integration of high-demand facilities.

The solution is delivered as a standardised modular system combining a synchronous condenser, flywheel, starting system, lube-oil system, cooling options, auxiliaries, an electrical house and an optional noise enclosure. It is supplied as a single integrated package to reduce on-site assembly requirements and simplify installation.

The design can support faster deployment and commissioning, simplify grid connection processes and allow scalable capacity additions without redesigning core electrical infrastructure. The flywheel is included as part of the stabilisation system and is housed within an integrated safety enclosure.
